Artist Statement
Born amidst global turmoil in Korea in 1941, I navigated a tumultuous history, receiving education against the backdrop of the Great East Asian War, Second World War, Korean liberation, and the Korean War. In 1961, I audaciously enrolled in Hongik University's Department of Fine Arts. Recognition at the National Art Exhibition of Korea during high school fueled my art career.
I've participated in 22 solo exhibitions in Korea and 8 internationally, as well as over 400 group exhibitions in Korea and around 80 internationally. Notable events include my 2016 solo exhibition curated by 'Rich' magazine at the esteemed Chosun Ilbo Museum and the 2019 showcase at The Sylvia Wald and Po Kim Gallery in New York.
Awards include the 2005 Prize of Excellence in the Kobe Earthquake revival competition, two bronze prizes and a special prize at the Osaka Triennials, as well as the Total Art Award at the Total Art Grand Exhibition.
As a leader in art education, I pioneered the Cartoon and Animation Department at Sangmyung University, shaping curriculum and fostering talents. My hanji painting with a rubbing method established a distinctive genre in Korean contemporary art.
Nature is at the core of my artistic expression, evident in my award-winning artworks. In 2014, a transformative journey across America influenced my art, emphasizing personal growth and bridging generations.
My artwork, "Dancheong and Concrete," was exhibited at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York as part of "Only the Young: Experimental Art in Korea, 1960sā1970s."
